Principals Report
As we head into the second half of Term 1 I would like to say how impressed I am with student learning and achievements in classrooms. It is clear to see that structures put in place by teachers are supporting student learning which in turn is impacting student results in a positive way. This aligns with the DoE's commitment – Together we inspire and support all learners to succeed as connected, resilient, creative and curious thinkers.
Year 6 Camp – I was lucky enough to attend the Year 6 Camp last week, I was so proud of students and staff who attended the 3 day camp. Everyone involved was enthusiastic and excited and throughout each of the days we completed many activities despite the challenging weather. I would like to thank Mr Gatenby for his organisation of the camp along with his team of staff members who supported. School camps only run if staff are willing to give up their own time from family and friends so we are very lucky to have staff who support camps.
School Association – We are looking to extend our School Association team and are inviting community members to join our AGM to be held on Tuesday 7 April at 6.00pm. This is a great opportunity to have input into future planning of our school. A letter was sent home to all parents last week explaining the process and group further.
Student Wellbeing Survey – Years 4-6 students will undertake the 2020 Student Wellbeing Survey beginning Monday 16 March and concluding Friday 3 April. A separate parent/carer letter will be sent home today with more information and an option to opt out.
Novel Coronavirus - Please see a separate letter attached to this newsletter which explains the latest DoE update regarding the Novel Coronavirus.
Lil sessions – We would like to let our community know that we are adding a LiL session to our schedule for the remainder of Term 1 on Mondays. Outside Play and Story Time 1:45pm – 2:45pm. Join us in the ELC Pit to share some books and stories together; a fun way to help your child develop their listening, memory and word skills. There’ll also be time to enjoy a play time outside too.
Shave for a Cure – Today we held our Shave for a Cure event to raise money to support a cure for cancer. One of our students Shonae was the catalyst for the event volunteering to have her hair cut off in front of the whole school during lunchtime today. Our students raised over $500 and Shonae's cut hair will be sent off to be made into a wig to support cancer patients. Well done to Shonae - we are very proud of your efforts!

HANDWASHING is #1 in the hygiene stakes. Keeping our hands clean with good hand washing is one of the most important steps we can take to avoid getting sick and spreading our germs (bacteria and viruses) to others.
Some illnesses and diseases that can be spread by poor hand hygiene are colds, viruses, influenza (the flu) & gastro, just to name a few!
We need to wash our hands:
- before preparing and touching food
- after touching food such as raw chicken, meat and fish
- after going to the toilet
- after coughing, sneezing and blowing your nose
- after petting and playing with animals
It takes soap and water to wash our hands properly (or hand sanitiser if soap and water is not available) and we need to wash our hands for at least 15 – 20 seconds (sing the Happy Birthday song twice) to get rid of the germs properly.
RESPIRATORY HYGIENE – Respiratory hygiene is protecting other people from catching our germs when we are coughing and sneezing. When we cough and sneeze moist droplets are sprayed through the air from our noses and mouths. These droplets can carry germs a distance of up to 1 meter and some germs can live for several hours. If we use our hands to cover our coughs and sneezes we end up with the infected droplets on our hands which we can spread simply by touching objects. Other people then touch these objects unknowingly and the germs are transferred to their hands.
We need to use tissues to catch our coughs and sneezes. We need to bin the tissues quickly and then we need to wash our hands (or use hand sanitiser if soap and water unavailable). If we don’t have tissues at our disposal it is recommended that we sneeze or cough into the crook of our elbows.
If we are unwell it is best to stay at home until we have recovered. This lessens the chances of us spreading our illnesses to others.

UPDATING STUDENT DETAILS
It is vital for the school office to have updated details for all students. In the event of a medical issue or emergency event this information is crucial in the care and response that we provide for your child/children. Please ensure to update information with the office staff as required: emergency contact details, phone numbers, address details and any changes to your childs' medical needs eg. asthma, anaphylaxis.
ABSENCES / ATTENDANCE
If your child is absent please notify the school office before 9:30am:
- Leave a message on the answering machine 6275 7272

- Call the office staff 6275 7222
- Email: austins.ferry.primary@education.tas.gov.au

CAR PARK SPEED LIMITS
Speed limits throughout the school are restricted to 10km. Please note that regardless of what time of day, if the gates are open there is someone here! Everyone's safety is important.
KISS & DROP
Please note that the 'Kiss & Drop' is for drop off and pick-up only and not a parking zone.
END OF DAY MESSAGES
Please notify the school office as early as possible and prior to 2:25pm if you need to get a message to your child/ren for the end of the day. Class notice bags are collected at 2:30pm and passing on messages after 2:30pm becomes quite difficult. We cannot guarantee messages will be received effectively after this time.
